Abstract:The variation in wing?length among birds within flocks of Long?tailed Tits trapped between October and March over a six year period was significantly less than that observed between flocks. Neither seasonal variation (both within and between seasons) nor observer error could account for this observation. Since the mean level of relatedness of flock members is known to be high., it is suggested that this result reflects the heritability of wing?length. These results were compared with similar data from the Great Tit Parus major. The variation in wing?length among birds within flocks of Long?tailed Tits trapped between October and March over a six year period was significantly less than that observed between flocks.
