Abstract:Crop contents of 76 ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) collected during spring and summer of 1957-1962 on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, were examined. The spring foods of adults were the leaves and fronds of several plant species, and by late summer mainly the fruits of salal (Gaultheria shallon) and other plants. The chicks fed heavily on insects during the first few weeks, but by late July their diet was predominantly plant material and resembled that of the adults. Summer foods were similar to those taken by blue grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) on the same areas.
