Abstract:During breeding season bathing behaviour in all Canaries declined in breeding as well as in nonbreeding birds. The daily consumption of water decreased whereas the latency increased. Presumably this behavioural change was caused by a decrease in the available amount of specific endogenous behavioural energy after depriving the birds of water over 9 days. It is suggested that the temporal endogenous reduction of a particular drive facilitates activities in another instinctive behavioural system.
