Abstract:In chickens affected with low-virulent avian influenza virus, there can be lesions in the respiratory and reproductive tracts, and in the kidneys, both in the field and by experimental disease reproduction. High-virulent avian influenza virus causes hemorrhage, edema and ischemic necrosis of tissues in chickens, due to its effect on blood vessels and possibly the heart, and these may be the only lesions, particularly in those dying quickly. As infection proceeds, the viruses also cause necrosis by direct action on parenchymal cells, firstly in the pancreas and brain, or the heart, followed soon after by the kidney, skeletal muscle, and possibly the lung and/or the spleen. Immunohistochemistry has beeen a powerful tool in specifying these affected organs, and also has showed that, in most tests, other lymphoid organs had been affected secondarily. Turkeys have a similar range of lesions to chickens, except that there has been more severe neurotropism in this species.
