Abstract:The present study was stimulated by the presence of Mycoplasma meleagridis and detection of specific antibodies in many turkey breeding flocks. The experiments were designed to study the pathogenesis and histopathology of airsacculitis in young turkeys beginning at about one day of age, when the infection is expected under natural conditions. These studies were made on birds originally coming from mycoplasma-free flocks, and controlled experiments were conducted on groups of birds in "Horsfall units" and "Germ free isolators." The lesions, both gross and microscopic, were studied at stages of 6 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, one week, two weeks, three weeks, and four weeks postinoculation, and changes were compared with appropriate controls at each stage. Characteristic lesions, both gross and microscopic, were well formed by the end of the third week, and thereafter were more spreading in nature though without much basic change, either grossly or microscopic. The mycoplasmas isolated from different inoculated birds at different stages were of the same serotype used in the original inoculum.
