Abstract:A lyophilized turkey herpesvirus vaccine was evaluated for control of Marek's disease (MD). The chicks used were hatched from dams vaccinated at one day of age with live duck-cell-associated turkey herpesvirus (FC 126 strain). The chicks were vaccinated at one day of age with lyophilized turkey herpesvirus vaccine (same strain), and at 21 days postvaccination were challenged with live virulent MD virus. There were 7 doses of vaccine, ranging from 10 to 10,000 plaqueforming units (PFU), and one control treatment. The vaccine significantly (P<0.001) reduced the incidence of MD. Protection was provided by doses of 211 PFU or more; reduced protection was observed at doses of 56 PFU or less.
