Abstract:Individual cock prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido) were successfully trapped in their territories by use of hen decoys posed in a copulating posture. The decoys elicited a sexual response in the cocks and thus lured them into position for trapping with either bownet or noose carpet. Eighteen cocks have been caught in this manner, plus 64 prairie chickens and four sharp-tails (Pedioecetes phasianellus) using bownets with corn as bait. Trap construction is described.
