Abstract:Viscera of 106 greater prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) collected in 1964 and 1965 were examined for helminths. Three species of nematodes were found: Seurocyrnea colini, Heterakis gallinarum, and Dispharynx nasuta. Dispharynx nasuta had not previously been recorded from greater prairie chickens. None of the nematodes in the observed infections was considered a serious mortality threat to the greater prairie chicken. Two species of cestodes, found in 1964, were too poorly fixed to be identified. One cestode specimen was similar to Choanotaenia or Raillietina; the other resembled Metroliasthes. Incidence of parasitism was 82.1 percent for all specimens examined with the highest infection being 27 nematodes in one bird.
