Abstract:Mortality of coots (Fulica americana) in Wisconsin was attributed to a species of trematode of the genus Sphaeridiotrema, presumably S. globulus. This fluke had not previously been incriminated as a mortality factor of coots. During a 2-year period, fatalities observed exceeded 700 birds. Mortality occurred primarily during the spring migration period, with limited mortality observed one fall. The cumulative effects of the trematode infestations and the stresses of migration and the prebreeding season resulted in the development of clinical disease and mortality.
