Abstract:Gamma irradiation reduced the pathogenicity of Histomonas meleagridis for turkeys. Turkeys surviving infection with irradiated histomonads were as susceptible to a challenge infection of histomonads as controls on the basis of appearance of sulfur-yellow feces and death. All but one of the turkeys died with enterohepatitis. The strain of histomonads isolated from the initially surviving turkeys, subcultured for several generations and then reinoculated into turkeys, continued to show reduced pathogenicity.
