Abstract:The squamational patterns of the nape, breast and cheek of the Central Johnny darter, Etheostoma n. nigrum, and the scaly Johnny darter, E. n. eulepis, appear to be determined by incompletely dominate genes at one or a few loci. The distribution of two subspecies and their intergrades in Minnesota is complex. Intergrades, E. n. nigrum, and E. n. eulepis occur in samples from the Red, upper Mississippi, Minnesota and St. Croix drainages. There is little question about the polymorphic nature of the Johnny darters of the Great Lakes region, but several lines of evidence, morphological, ecological and distributional, make it appear undesirable to recognize the scaly Johnny darter, E. n. eulepis, as a subspecies.
