Abstract:(1) Populations of Cardium (Cerastoderma) glaucum around the British Isles have been examined with respect to their environments and their habitat preferences compared with C. edule. (2) C. edule occupies a littoral or sub-littoral position in tidal estuaries and is limited by its inability to colonize non-tidal waters. (3) C. glaucum prefers permanent submersion in lagoons and is restricted by an inability to tolerate wave action. (4) Populations of C. glaucum in the British Isles are concentrated in south-east England between Suffolk and Hampshire, where all available habitats have been colonized. On Atlantic coasts, C. glaucum populations are sparser, but the species distribution indicates expansion. (5) It is suggested that dispersal of C. glaucum is best accounted for by migrating wildfowl transporting the cockle spat.
