Abstract:Two groups of 2.5-week-old turkeys were exposed to either virulent or avirulent Escherichia coli by aerosol. The lung, liver, and air sac of each bird were examined for bacteria. Avirulent E. coli persisted at high titer in the lung, was cleared from the air sac after 2 days, and was never found in blood or liver. Virulent E. coli was cleared from the lung by 15 days and from the air sac after 5 days, and was found sporadically in blood and liver for 8 days. The results suggest that virulent E. coli contains virulence factors that permit passage from the respiratory tract to the blood stream, but that avirulent E. coli lacks them.
