Abstract:Foods ingested by starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are broken down differentially in the gizzard. Dietary estimates based on examination of gizzard contents are thus biased towards foods retained longest. An accurate assessment of the relative importance of staple foods in the starlings' diet can be obtained using correction factors derived from observed rates of breakdown of identical foods given to caged birds.
