Abstract:A summer census of New Hampshire ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) has been taken annually since 1949 by an accurate and relatively inexpensive method. Biologists cover on foot routes in seven regions characterized by different types of habitat. Routes are covered twice a year, once during the first half of summer and once during the second half, to take mortality into account. Results are being used to determine the causes of regional fluctuations in the state's ruffed grouse population.
