Abstract:Change in land-use pattern on a selected area in Jefferson County, New York, was determined from a sequence of aerial photographs taken in 1941, 1948, 1959, and 1963. From 1956 to 1963 the New York State Conservation Department made an annual winter census of Hungarian partridge (Perdix perdix) in the same area. Information from the 1963 census was used to divide the region into sections of high, low, and zero partridge density. Differences between the three areas in respect to both total number of birds and total number of coveys present are significant (p < 0.05). Differences in the percent active agriculture between the three areas are highly significant (p < 0.01). Linear correlation analysis suggests that the mean number of birds per covey in relation to percent active agriculture is the best index to the suitability of the habitat for Hungarian partridge.
