Abstract: | Summary Agonistic displays were studied in the Java Finch. In common with other passerines, supplanting attacks and head-forward displays were observed. However, head-twisting and head-waving as aggressive signals appear to be unique to the species. Backward-waving, another display observed, occurs also in the Cutthroat Finch. Head-twisting, head-waving, and backward-waving are present in juvenile begging postures which have apparently been ritualized and used as aggressive displays by adult Java Finches |
