The idea of building a portal on Indian Birds was initiated in April, 2009. Coincidently, the experience of Mr.Arpit Deomurari working in GIS Cell, who has passion for birds and has been working on this database for about 9 years, came in handy. He has both the knowledge on birds and also by profession he is a computer engineer thus, the job of developing website using open source software in-house become manageable within the resources available with FES. However, the portal development was later on supported by Duleep Mathai Nature Conservation Trust (DMNCT).

FES is now aiming to develop similar websites for mammals, flora, butterflies, reptiles etc. by networking and pooling resources from other individuals and organizations for a wider dissemination of Indian biodiversity information through various portals.

This is a huge task and would not be possible without the involvement of various individuals and institutes interested in the conservation of biodiversity of India.
