Book Excerpts

369. Turdus iliacus, Linnaeus.

Gould, Birds of Europe, pl. 78 - Blyth, Cat. 937.

The Redwing Thrush.

Descr. - Above pale brown, with a whitish eyestreak, and the edges of the wing-coverts and quills tipped pale ; beneath white, tinged with ferruginous in parts, and with a dark brown neck-stripe, and streaks of brown on the chin, throat, breast, and sides of abdomen; the sides of the neck, below the nape, pale ferruginous ; a patch of bright rufous beneath each wing, and on the flanks.

Bill dusky ; legs yellow-brown; irides brown. Length 8 1/2 to 9 inches; wing 4 3/4 ; tail 3 1/4 ; bill at front 5/8 ; tarsus 1 1/8.

The Redwing has been lately found in the N. W. Himalayas, but very rarely. But in Kohat, as I am assured by Mr. Blyth, according to a very good observer, the late Lieut. Trotter, it is a regular winter visitant in large flocks. Bonaparte states that the oriental bird differs slightly from the European one, but he has not bestowed upon it a separate specific name.

There are no other true Thrushes, spotted beneath, recorded from the East ; but there are one or two from Africa.

368. Turdus iliacus, Linn.

Syst. Nat. i. p. 292; Jerd. B. Ind. i. p, 332.-

The Red-wing Thrush.

Above olive brown, darker, and suffused with russet on the forehead and crown; supercilium whitish; edges of the wing coverts and quills tipped pale; under parts pale buff, fading to white on the belly and ferruginous on the flanks ; chin and throat unspotted; cheeks, upper breast, lower throat and upper flanks with dark brown terminal spots; under tail coverts white, the basal half of each feather margined with brown; axillaries and under wing coverts rich chesnut; bill dusky; legs yellow brown ; irides brown.

Length.-8.5 to 9 inches ; wing 4.75; tail 3.25 ; culmen 0.7 to 0.85 ; tarsus 1.25.

Hab.- Atlantic to the Pacific. Winters in the British Isles and Western and Southern Europe, occasionally crossing the Mediterranean into Algeria, and wintering in Persia, Turkestan, and N.-W. India; but is rare in the latter.

Of the habits of this bird nothing need be said, as without its mention no list of British birds would be complete.

The Redwing.

Turdus iliacus, Linn. Syst, Nat. i, p. 292 (1766) ; Blyth, Cat. p. 161; Jerd. B. 1. i, p. 532; Hume, Cat. no. 369; Seebohm, Cat. B. M. v, p. 189.

The Redwing Thrush, Jerd.

Coloration. The whole upper plumage and tail olive-brown ; the wings dark brown, all the feathers edged with olive-brown, the greater coverts most conspicuously so; a broad pale buff supercilium from the bill to the nape; lores black; ear-coverts brown streaked with buff ; chin, throat, and breast pale buff streaked with blackish ; middle of the abdomen white; sides of the abdomen white streaked with brown; flanks, axillaries, and under wing-coverts chestnut; under tail-coverts white, basally margined with brown.

The summer plumage, resulting from the wear of the feathers at their margins, does not differ very much from the winter plumage.

Bill dark brown ; legs pale ; iris brown (Seebohm). Length about 8.5; tail 3.3; wing 4.6; tarsus 1.2; bill from gape 1.

Distribution. I have not been able to examine any specimen of Redwing procured in India, and I admit the species on the authority of Jerdon, who states that at the time he wrote it had been lately found in the N. W. Himalayas, but very rarely. " But at Kohat," he adds, " as I am assured by Mr. Blyth, according to a very good observer, the late Lieut. Trotter, it is a regular winter visitant in large flocks."

The Redwing has even a larger range than the Fieldfare, being found in the Northern parts of Europe and Asia in summer from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and wandering south in the winter as far as Turkestan and Persia on the east, and Southern Europe on the west.

The Redwing.

Turdus musicus Linn., S. N., i, p. 169 (1758) (Sweden). Turdus iliacus. Blanf. & Oates, ii, p. 150.

Vernacular names. None recorded.

Description. Whole upper plumage and tail olive-brown, darkest on the head, palest on the upper tan-coverts; a broad supercilium buff; wings dark brown, the feathers edged with pale rufescent olive-brown; lores and ear-coverts deep brown, the latter with faint pale central striae; flanks, under wing-coverts and axillaries chestnut; under surface white suffused with buff on the breast and sides and streaked with brown, which is almost black on the throat and sides of the neck.

Colours of soft parts. Iris dark brown; upper mandible dark brown, lower mandible dark at the tip, fleshy horny at the base; legs fleshy grey-brown.

Measurements. Total length about 230 to 240 ram.; wing 110 to 120 mm.; tail 76 to 84 mm.; tarsus about 30 mm.; culmen 18 to 20 mm.

The Young bird has the feathers of the upper parts, the wing-coverts and inner secondaries streaked with fulvous and those of the back and scapulars also tipped with black; the underpays are dull white barred and spotted with blackish.

Distribution. Iceland, Northern Europe as far South as North Germany and Central Russia East to the Pacific but getting less common East of the Yenesei. In Winter it migrates South to the Canaries, Northern Africa, Palestine, Persia and Turkestan. A doubtful straggler into India. Jerdon recorded it as having been obtained in the N.W. Himalayas and also that Lieut. Trotter had informed him that it was a regular visitor at Kohat. Magrath, Whitehead, Harington and others have quite failed to confirm this latter statement.

Nidification. The Redwing makes a nest which is a small, neat replica of the Fieldfare's, but it does not nest in colonies and selects as a site some low bush or shrub where the nest is very inconspicuous and, at times, it even builds it on the ground. The eggs are like small Blackbird's and do not vary nearly as much as the Fieldfare's do. Hartert gives the average of fifty eggs as 25.8 x 18.7 mm.: maxima 27.8 x 19.8 and 26.2 x 20.0 mm.; minima 23.5 x 19.0 mm. and 26.0 x 17.5 mm.

They lay four to six eggs and breed principally in June.

Habits. The Redwing is a frequenter of more heavily-wooded areas than the Fieldfare and is seldom seen in open, treeless country.   Its song is sweet but not very powerful.
