Book Excerpts

529.  Horeites major, Hodgson.

Moore, P. Z. S., 1854.

The Large Hill-Warbler.

Descr. -  Above olive-brown reddish, on the wings ; tail rounded, and of a dusky brown, the outer webs fringed with olive-brown ; cap red-brown; a yellowish ferruginous superciliary streak extending over the ear-coverts, which are ruddy brown above, ashy beneath; throat, sides of neck, centre of breast, and abdomen, ashy white; sides of the breast and flanks olive-brown.

Bill dark horny, fleshy at the base beneath; feet yellowish. Length 5 inches ; wing 2 1/2 ; tail 2 2/10 ; bill at front 3/8 ; tarsus 9/10.

This species has a comparatively larger bill, and longer wing than the others of the genus, and also stronger feet.   From Nepal.

I obtained two species, apparently of this genus, on the Khasia hills, from 5,000 to 6,000 feet of elevation. They frequent the grassy hills, hiding themselves with celerity, and in their habits closely resemble Locustella.

Moore's Bush or Large Hill- Warbler.

Upper surface olive brown, shading into russet on the wings and tail, which are edged with dark olive brown, and into rich dark russet-brown colour on the nape and head; supercilium yellowish ferruginous, extending over the ear coverts, which are brown tinged with ruddy; chin and abdomen white; throat, sides of neck, and centre of breast olive brown, deeper on the flanks, thighs, and under tail coverts. Bill Phylloscopine, dark brown ; under mandible paler at base ; 5th and 6th primaries nearly equal and longest; 2nd shorter than the secondaries ; 1st more than half the length of the second; legs, feet, and claws pale brown.

Length.- 3.9 to 4.5 inches; wing 2.41 to 2.63 ; tail 2.2 to 2.4; tarsus 1.02; culmen 0.55.

Hab.- The Himalayas, from Nepaul to Sikkim, and the Mountains of Chinese Thibet, descending into the valleys in the cold season.  Seebohm adds that it is probably a partial migrant breeding at or near the limit of forest growth on the Himalayas.

Horeites major, (Hodgson), Hume, Rough Draft N. & E. no. 529 (err. 629).

A nest said to belong to the Large Bush-Warbler was sent in with one of the parent birds in July from near Lachong in Native Sikkim, where it was found at an elevation of about 14,000 feet. It was placed at a height of about a foot from the ground in a stunted thorny shrub common at these high elevations. It was a very warm little cup, about 3 inches in diameter, composed of the finest fern and moss-roots, tiny fern-leaves, wool, and numbers of the coarse white crinkly hairs of the burhel. It contained three fresh eggs, regular, slightly elongated ovals, a little pointed towards the small end; the shell fine and compact, but with scarcely any gloss.

The ground-colour is white with a faint greenish-blue tinge, and on the larger half of the egg excessively minute specks of brownish red are thinly sprinkled, except just at the crown of the egg, where the specks are denser and exhibit a tendency to form a tiny cap. On the smaller half of the egg very few, if any, specklings are to be traced. In length the eggs measure 0·7 and 0·71, and in breadth 0·53 to 0·55.

The Large Hill-Warbler, Jerd.

Coloration. Forehead, crown, and nape chestnut-brown; upper plumage and visible portions of wings and tail olive-brown ; the two latter parts tinged with rufous; lores and behind the eye blackish ; a pale rufous supercilium; ear-coverts rufous-ashy; chin, throat, and breast greyish white ; centre of abdomen whitish ; sides of the body, vent, thighs, and under tail-coverts dull ochraceous-brown.

In the dry state, the upper mandible and tip of the lower are dark brown, the remainder of the bill yellowish; legs fleshy brown.

Length about 5 ; tail 2; wing 2.4; tarsus .9; bill from gape .6.

Distribution. Nepal and Sikhim.

Habits, &c. Breeds in Sikhim at high altitudes in July, constructing a cup-shaped nest, composed of fern-roots, hair, wool, moss, &c, in a low bush.

The eggs, which appear to be three in number, are, unlike those of most species of Horornis, of a white colour, sprinkled over the larger half of the egg with minute specks of brownish red. They measure .7 by .54.

The Large Bush-Warbler.
Horeites major Moore. P. Z. S , 1854, p. 105 (Nepal). Horornis major. Blanf. & Oates, 1, p. 438.
Vernacular names. None recorded.
Description. Forehead, crown and nape deep, rich chestnut-brown, the edge of the forehead and a supercilium paler and more rufous; whole upper plumage and visible portions of tail and wings dark olive-brown, the last tinged with rufous; lores next to the eye and a line behind dark brown; cheeks and upper parts of ear-coverts rufous; lower parts of ear-coverts, chin, throat, and breast greyish white; remainder of lower parts dull white suffused with brown on the sides oil the breast, flanks, thighs, vent and under tail-coverts; under wing-coverts and axillaries fulvous or fulvous-white.
Colours of soft parts. Iris hazel or deep brown; bill horny-brown above, yellow on the commissure and lower mandible; legs and feet tan-brown.
Measurements. Total length about 125 mm.; wing 57 to 67 mm.; tail 44 to 51 mm.; tarsus 24 to 25 mm.; culmen 11 mm.
Distribution. Nepal and Sikkim.
Nidification. The Large Bush-Warbler breeds in Sikkim at 9,000 feet upwards and perhaps down to 7,000 feet in May and June in dense forest. The only nest I have seen, authentic beyond all doubt, could not have been distinguished from one of that bird. The eggs were also indistinguishable but were large, measuring 18.3 x 13.9 mm. The nest and eggs described under the name of this bird in Hume's ' Nests and Eggs,' p. 281, were not of this species.
Habits. Those of the genus but the Large Bush-Warbler keeps more to higher elevations, even in Winter, than does any other species of this genus.
