The Maronne Oriole.

Descr. - Whole head, neck, and wings, glossy black ; the rest of the plumage, both above and below, glistening maroon red ; tail dull Indian red.The young bird is brown above, darker on the head, and the tail red; beneath sullied white, with numerous longitudinal brown streaks.

Bill bluish; legs dark plumbeous ; irides pale yellow. Length 11 1/2 inches; wing 6 ; tall 4 1/2; bill at front 1 ; tarsus 1 1/10.

This curiously plumaged Oriole Is found in the eastern part of the Himalayas, Nepal, and Sikhim, extending Into Assam, Arrakan, and Tenasserim. It is found from 2,000 feet, or so, to at least 7,000 feet, generally In small flock.-, keeping to high trees, and has a fine loud mellow call. I found those I examined to have partaken of caterpillars only.   In the young bird the iris is yellow-brown.

Other genera placed in this sub-family are Mimeta and Sphecotheres, from Australia, and the Oceanic region. Some species, formerly ranked under the former genus, are now considered to be true Orioles. Sericulus is classed by some among the Orioles, but is more generally considered to belong to the Birds of Paradise. Oriolia, from Madagascar, probably belongs also to this family, and shows some affinity in its coloring to 0. Traillii.

Oriolus traillii (Vigors), Jerdon B. Ind. ii, p. 112; Hume, cat. no. 474.

From Sikkim Mr. Gammie writes: "I took a nest of this Oriole on the 24th April, at an elevation of about 2500 feet. It was suspended, within ten feet of the ground, from an outer fork of a branch of a small leafy tree, which grew in a patch of low dense jangle. It is a neat cup, composed of fibrous bark and strips of the outer part of dry grass-stems, intermixed with skeletonized leaves and green moss, and lined with fine grass. Besides being firmly bound by the rim of the cup to the horizontal forking branches by fibrous barks, several strings extended from one branch to the other, both under and in front of the nest, while other strings from the body of the nest were fastened to an upright twig that rose immediately behind the fork, thus most securely retaining it in its position.

"Externally the nest measured 5 inches wide by 2·75 in height; internally 3·25 wide by 2 deep. It contained three fresh eggs.

"The female came quite close, making loud complaints against the robbing of her nest."

The nest is that of a typical Oriole, usually very firmly and substantially built, and of course always suspended at a fork between two twigs. A nest taken by Mr. Gammie in Sikkim on the 20th April, at an elevation of about 2500 feet, is a deep substantial cup, nearly 4 inches in diameter and 2½ in depth internally. It is everywhere nearly an inch in thickness. The suspensory portion composed of vegetable fibres; towards the exterior dead leaves, bamboo-sheaths, green moss, and tendrils of creeping plants are profusely intermingled; interiorly, it is closely and regularly lined with very fine grass.

A nest sent me by Mr. Mandelli was found on the 3rd April at Namtchu, and contained three fresh eggs. It is precisely similar to the one above described, except that in the lining roots are mingled with the fine grass, and that instead of being suspended in a fork, it was partly wedged into and partly rested on a fork.

As a rule, however, as I know from other nests subsequently obtained, the nests are always suspended like those of the Common Oriole.

Two eggs of this species obtained by Mr. Gammie closely resemble those of O. melanocephalus. In shape they are regular moderately elongated ovals; the shell is strong, firm, and moderately glossy. The ground is white with a creamy or brownish-pink tinge; the markings are blackish-brown spots and specks, almost confined to a zone about the large end, where they are all more or less enveloped in a brownish-red haze or nimbus. In length they measure 1·12 by 0·82, and 1·14 by 0·83.

Coloration. The whole head, neck, chin, and throat black; the wings and under wing-coverts, with the tips of some of the scapulars, glossy black; remainder of plumage, with the tail, bright shining maroon-red, the tail not so bright as the other parts.

The young have the crown and nape dark brown; back, rump, scapulars, and wing-coverts dark brown, each feather edged with rufous; upper tail-coverts maroon-red, with black shafts; tail maroon-red; the greater part of the middle pair of feathers and the edges of the outer webs of the others brown; lower plumage white, streaked with brown; under tail-coverts pale maroon; wings brown. As the bird grows older the head becomes black, the upper plumage loses the rufous fringes and turns gradually to maroon, the under plumage becomes tinged with red, the streaks disappear, and the adult plumage is assumed by a series of slow changes.

Bill pale bluish grey ; irides pale buffy yellow; feet plumbeous; caws blue at base, pale horny at tip (Scully).

Length 11; tail 4.5 ; wing 6; tarsus 1; bill from gape 1.45.

Distribution. The Himalayas from the Sutlej valley to Dibrugarh in Assam ; the Khasi hills ; Manipur ; Karennee ; Northern Tenasserim; Pegu; Arrakan. This species is rare and very locally distributed. It ascends the Himalayas to 7000 or 8000 feet.

Habits, &c. The nest of this Oriole has been found in Sikhim in April. It is of the usual Oriole type. The eggs resemble those of O. kundoo, and measure about 1.13 by .82.

The Maroon Oriole.

Pastor traillii Vigors, P. Z. S., 1831, p. 175 (Himalayas, Darjiling). Oriolus traillii. Blanf. & Oates, i, p. 508.

Vernacular names. Melambok (Lepcha); Tania-pia (Bhut.).

Description. - Adult male. Whole head and neck glossy black; wings and thigh-coverts dull black; tail chestnut-maroon ; remainder of plumage deep crimson maroon, highly glossed.

Colours of soft parts. Iris pale buff to deep orange-yellow; bill bluish lead-colour, paling towards the tip ; legs and feet plumbeous, the claws tipped blackish.

Measurements. Total length about 280 mm,; wing 142 to 152 mm.; tail 101 to 111 mm.; tarsus 28 to 29 mm,; culmen 29 to 31 mm.

Female. Head and neck glossy black; mantle dull maroon-brown, gradually changing to crimson-maroon on the rump and upper tail-coverts ; tail chestnut-maroon, the central feathers and outer webs of the lateral feathers maroon-brown; lower plumage greyish white, darkest on breast and flanks and albescent on the centre of the abdomen, streaked throughout with blackish; old females are often tinged with crimson on the flanks; under tail-coverts crimson-maroon; thigh-coverts blackish.

Colours of soft parts as in the male but duller.

The Young male is like the female but more richly coloured and with the lower parts whiter, less grey-brown ; the flanks and breast are more suffused with crimson.

Nestling. Above brown, rather darker on the crown, the feathers of the mantle and the wing-coverts edged with rufous ; rump brown, streaked darker and suffused with chestnut; tail-feathers maroon-brown, the inner webs of all the lateral feathers chestnut-pink; chin and throat brownish white, streaked with dark brown; breast almost entirely brown; abdomen and flanks white with brown centres; thigh-coverts dark brown ; under tail-coverts pale pinkish chestnut.

Distribution. Throughout the Himalayas from the Sutlej Valley to Eastern Assam, Manipur, the Hilly tracts of Burma to Tenasserim, Shan States, Siam and Annam.

I can trace no constant differences in the plumage of this bird necessitating its division into geographical races.

Nidification. The Maroon Oriole breeds in the Hills of Assam between 2,000 and 6,000 feet during May and June and in Sikkim during April and May. The nest is a typical Oriole's and the eggs are like those of the European Oriole but with a pink ground-colour, generally fairly deep in tint. The surface of the shell is very glossy. Twenty-four eggs average 29.4 X 20.6 mm.: maxima 30.7 X 21.0 and 28.9 x 21.7 mm.; minima 26.3 x 21.4 and 30.5 x 18.1 mm.

Habits. The Maroon Oriole is far more a forest bird than is any of its yellow cousins, even the Malay Golden Oriole. It is also a wilder, more shy bird. Otherwise, except that its flight seems more direct and rapid and less undulating, it differs in no respects from these birds. In North Cachar I found it fed largely on the fruit of the various Fici when these were ripe.
