224. Arachnothera pusilla, Blyth.

Cat. Birds, p. 328 - Horsf., Cat. 1064 - A. affinis, Blyth, Cat. 1348 - A. inornata, apud Blyth (olim) - Cinnyris longirostris, Jerdon, Suppl. Cat., No. 236 bis.

The Little Spider-hunter.

Descr. - Above, olive-green, more or less fulvescent; the crown darker, with scale-like feathers, merely green-edged ; a dark streak from the base of the upper mandible ; chin and throat white ; rest of the under parts dull greenish-albescent, passing into bright pale yellow on the belly; tail-feathers slightly tipped with whitish, chiefly on their inner webs, forming a spot most distinct outwardly.

Bill dusky ; legs plumbeous-brown ; irides brown.

Length 5  3/4 inches ; wing 2 1/2 ; tail 1 1/2; bill at front 1 1/2 ; tarsus

This Spider-hunter is declared by Horsfield to be very closely allied to A. longirostra, Latham, Temm., Pl. col. 84, f. 1, and only to differ in being a little smaller, and in the yellow of the abdomen not being so marked. I have found it several times in the forests of the Malabar coast, the Wynaad, and in parts of Mysore bordering the Neilgherries. It is, however, rare, and it has not been noticed elsewhere in India ; but it is common in the countries to the east of the Bay of Bengal.

Several nearly-related species are found in Malayana. Among others, A. Phayrei, Bl, from Pegu, very close to A. magna; A.

Aovigastra, Eyton, equally as large as A. chrysogenys; A. inornata and A. modesta, Eyton ; all from Malacca.

We now come to the typical Sun-birds, of rich and often metallic plumage, which were named Cinnyris by Cuvier, hut to which the prior appellation given by Illiger, Nectarinia, is now applied. They are birds with bill long or moderate, slender, slightly curved ; the tip acute and entire ; the edges minutely denticulated; base of upper mandible overlapping the edge of the lower one; nostrils short, oval, and basal, placed in a fossa. The wings are rounded ; 1st quill short; 4th usually the longest; the tail moderate or long, even or graduated; tarsus longish, slender. They have,, of late, been greatly sub-divided; and as Horsfield, t Gray, and others have adopted these divisions, I shall follow them here. Birds of this family are called Shakar-khora, i. e., Sugar-eater, H. -  Man-changi, or Phul-chingi, Beng. - Munaga-jitta, Tel., i. e. 'the birds of the Erythrina flower.' - Sag-vit-pho, Lepch. - Chong-jip, Bhot. Gen. AEthopyga, Cabanis. Char. - Bill of moderate length and curvature; tail graduated, with the central tail-feathers much elongated. Two or more groups may be found in this genus. The first has the predominant colour fine scarlet or red, and the rump usually sulphur-yellow (whence Cabanis's name). They are found both in India and Malayana.

A lesser section may be made of those which have the throat and breast of the same red as the back, and the tail glossy-green or purple.

Upper surface of the body olive, more yellow on the back and scapulars; crown dark brown, with olive edges to the feathers; wings dark brown, the lesser and median coverts olive or broadly edged with that colour; greater series of coverts and the quills with broad olive yellow margins to their outer webs; tail brownish black, the feathers margined with olive and with white ends, broadest towards the outer feathers; sides of the head ashy brown, with a space in front and beneath the eye and a very light eyebrow white; a dark loral band, chin and throat white; breast,, abdomen and under tail coverts bright yellow; pectoral tufts deep chrome yellow ; under surface of the wings brown, with the inner margins of the quills and the coverts white ;. upper mandible black; lower mandible as well as the legs and feet leaden grey; irides dark brown.

Length. - 5.75 to 6.5 inches; wing 2.8 ; tail 1.9; tarsus 0.7; culmen 1.65.

The adult female is similar in plumage to the male, except that the pectoral tufts are absent.
Hab- - South India, Bengal, Tipperah, Chittagong and Arracan hills; also Tenasserim and southern portion of the Malay Peninsula, the Andaman Islands and the islands of Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Celebes. It has been found also in the Wynaad and in parts of Mysore and Travancore, also on the Neilgherries and the Malabar Coast. Shelley, quoting Hume and Davison, says that in the southern portion of the Indian Peninsula, it has been obtained from Kotagherry and other localities in the Neilgherries, but it is not so abundant as in Tenasserim, where it is the most widely-spread Spider Hunter and frequents the plantain gardens. It clings upside down to the purple bract-leaves of the young plantain bunches, with its head turned up inside the bract to suck the nectar from the flowers.

The Little Spider-Hunter.

Certhia longirostra Lath., Ind. Orn., i, p. 299 (1790) (Bengal, Sylhet). Arachnothera longirostris. Blanf. & Oates, ii, p. 371.

Vernacular names. None recorded.

Description. Upper plumage and lesser wing-coverts olive-green, the feathers of the forehead and crown centred with black; lores and a line over the eye greyish-white ; a line from the gape blackish; sides of the head ashy-green; chin and throat greyish-white gradually changing to bright yellow on the lower breast and remainder of lower plumage; wing-feathers brown edged with olive-green; axillaries and under wing-coverts silky yellowish-white ; pectoral tufts mixed chrome and orange-yellow.

Colours of soft parts. Iris dark brown; bill, upper mandible dark brown to almost black, lower mandible slaty-grey, palest next the gape; legs dark plumbeous.

Measurements. Male, wing 60 to 67 mm.; tail 39 to 44 mm. tarsus 17 to 18 mm.; culmen 35 to 41 mm. Female, wing 58 to 60 mm. ; culmen 28 to 31 mm.

Distribution. Western coast of India from the Palni and Nilgiri Hills to Belgaum ; East and South Assam, Eastern Bengal in Tippera, Chittagong and the Hill Tracts from Manipur to the Chin Hills; Burma South to the whole of the Malay Peninsula; Siam, Annam, Cochin China and Shan States.

Throughout the whole of this vast area I can find no character by which this species can be divided into geographical races.

Nidification. The Little Spider-Hunter breeds in Southern India principally in March and April between the level of the plains and, it is said, up to 5,500 feet. In Assam and Burma the principal breeding months are May and June, but the season is very extended and I have taken eggs in every month of the year from March to September and many birds have two broods. In Assam it very seldom breeds above 2,500 feet and its favourite haunts are the dense, humid evergreen-forests in the foot-hills and up to about 2,000 feet. The nest is exactly like that of the Indian Streaked Spider-Hunter, made entirely of skeleton leaves and attached to the underside of a leaf of a plantain, castor-oil tree, dock, kydia or almost any other large-leaved plant, whilst in Travancore Stewart found the nests built under the leaves of the elephant-grass. In Siam Herbert says that it breeds in the Winter months, building similar nests in similar positions.

The eggs are utterly unlike any other known eggs of the Spider-Hunters. The ground varies from white with the faintest tinge of pink to a warm salmon-pink, whilst the markings consist of specks of bright reddish-brown, sparse everywhere except in a dense, well-defined zone round the larger end. The only variation from these I have seen is a pair taken by Herbert which are pure white except for a zone of tiny purple-black specks. There is no gloss and the shell is very fragile. One hundred eggs average 18.5 x 13.1 mm.; maxima 19.1 x 13.1 and 18.1 x 13.9 mm.; minima 17.0 x 13.3 and 18.8 x 12.5 mm.

Habits. Although in Darjeeling it is said to be found up to 6,000 feet or even higher, the Small Spider-Hunter is ordinarily a bird of lower levels than the Indian Streaked Spider-Hunter. The latter is most common between 2,500 and 4,000 feet, the former between the plains and 2,000 feet. It also keeps more to evergreen-forests and, though it prefers the edges and more open places in these, I have seen it well inside them, both in the breeding and non-breeding season. It is a much more silent bird than the larger forms, though its notes are soft replicas of theirs and is uttered both on the wins; and when at rest. Its flight is more direct and less dipping than that of most Spider-Hunter's, but its display is similar to theirs. When " whirring " in front of the female the axillaries are displayed very prominently and are much more noticeable than at other times.
