Book Excerpts

281. Dicrurus caerulescens, Lin.

Lanius fingah, Shaw - Edwards, pl. 56 - Jerd., Cat., 56 -  Blyth, Cat. 1222 - Horsf., Cat. 197 - Phari buchanga, Hind. -  Dhapri, H. (Buch. Ham.) - D'houli, Beng. - Nella (or Konda) passala poligadu, Tel.

The White-bellied Drongo.

Descr. - Upper plumage, wings, and tail, black, With a blue gloss ; chin, throat, and breast, iron-grey ; abdomen and lower tail-coverts, white; bill and feet black ; irides lakeed.

Length 9 1/2; inches ; wing 4 3/4 ; tail nearly 5 ; tarsus 8/10 ; bill at front 7/10.

This species is the type of Bonaparte's sub-genus Buchanga, to which belong D. leucupygialis, Bl, from Ceylon, very closely allied to D. cineraceus from Java and China ; and D. leucophaeus, v. (cineraceus, Blyth), from Malacca.

The White-bellied Drongo is found throughout India, in open forest, in the well-wooded districts generally, and, now and then, in gardens and groves, throughout the barer portions of the country, but it is nowhere plentiful. Thin open forests are its  chief haunts, from the level of the sea, to 4,000 feet of elevation. I have seen it in Malabar, and on the slopes of the Neilgherries, at Madras, Nellore, Central India, and rarely near Calcutta. Eastward of the Bay of Bengal it has not been observed.

It almost always captures its insect-prey on the wing, from a moderately high perch.   I have, however, seen it descend to the ground for one. It has a very sweet song, as well as the usual harsh cry of the birds of this genus. Tickell calls its song a wild mellow whistle, pleasingly modulated.
Other species of this genus are found in Burmah, Ceylon, and the Malay countries generally. One, D. lencophaeus, from Malacca, is of a light ashy color, and evidently forms the link to the Campephaginae. Dicrurus edoliformis, Blyth, from Ceylon, is a  remarkable species, with the bill and plumage of Edolius, but wanting the lengthened outer tail-feathers, which are a little longer only than the next pair, and have a distinct curve inwards.

The African species of Drongo are separated under the name of Musicus, Reichenbart, Drongo, Bonap.

Dicrurus caeruleus (Müll.), Hume, Rough Draft N. & E. no. 281.

I have never seen a nest of the White-bellied Drongo. Mr. R. Thompson says: "This bird's breeding habitat is from 2500 to 6000 feet in the Himalayas. It is common on the south-eastern slopes of Nainital. It lays in May and June, placing its shallow cup-shaped nest in some little fork near the top of a moderate-sized oak-tree, if breeding on a mountain-side, but of some tall Alnus nipalensis, Acacia elata, or Acer oblongum, if nesting in deep dells or valleys. The nest appeared to be exactly like that of D. ater; but I can say nothing very positive about it or the eggs, as, though continually seeing them, I never, I think, took the trouble of getting one down."

Colonel G. F. L. Marshall, commenting on Mr. Thompson's remark that this Drongo is common near Nainital, says: "My experience on this point is negative; I have carefully searched the south-eastern slopes of Nainital for four years without even seeing the bird, so that I do not think it can be classed as a common breeder here."

Mr. J. Davidson informs us that on the 16th July he saw a brood of Dicrurus caerulescens on the Kondabhari Ghât, just able to fly. Referring to Western Khandeish, he tells us that he saw only two nests. They were on adjoining trees in the Akrani; they were largish nests, not like those of D. ater, but more resembling those of D. longicaudatus described in 'Nests and Eggs.' One nest contained three young ones, the other was only building; and nothing could have been more plucky than the way the old ones defended their nest.

Phari buchanga, Dhapri, Hind.; D'houli, Beng.; Nella (or Konda) passala poligadu, Tel.

Coloration. Upper plumage deep indigo ; throat and breast grey; abdomen, flanks, vent, and under tail-coverts white; the axillaries frequently tipped white.

Iris red ; bill, legs, and feet blackish (Hume Coll.).

Length about 9.5 ; tail 4.5 to 5.5 ; wing 4.5 to 5.5; tarsus .75 ; bill from gape 1.05; depth of fork of tail about T5 inches.

Distribution. Almost the whole of India proper, extending into Ceylon and ascending the Himalayas up to about 6000 feet. The north-western limits of this species appear to be a line drawn roughly from Cutch to Garhwal, and its eastern boundary the meridian of longitude traversing the eastern portion of the Rajmehal hills.

Habits, &c. A considerable number of these birds appear to spend the summer in the Himalayas and the winter in the plains; but many are no doubt resident in the latter, for they have been known to breed there, and their nests have been found in July. This Drongo frequents open jungle. The nest is described by Thompson as resembling that of D. ater, and it is built in the Himalayas near the top of moderate-sized trees in May and June. In Khandesh this species appears to breed in June and July. The eggs have not been described.

The White-bellied Drongo is said by Butler to have a rich Oriolelike note.

Buchanga leucopygialis (Blyth), Hume, Rough Draft N. & E. no. 281 bis.

Colonel Legge gives us the following account of the breeding of this Drongo, which is confined to Ceylon: "The breeding-season of this Drongo is from March until May; and the nest is almost invariably built at the horizontal fork of the branch of a large tree, at a considerable height from the ground, sometimes as much as 40 feet. It is a shallow cup, measuring about 2¼ inches in diameter by 1 in depth, and is compactly put together, well finished round the top, but sometimes rather loose on the exterior, which is composed of fine grass-stalks and bark-fibres, the lining being of fine grass or tendrils of creepers. The number of eggs varies from two to four, three being the most common. They vary much in shape, and also in the depth of their ground-tint; some are regular ovals, others are stumpy at the small end, while now and then very spherical eggs are laid. They are either reddish white, 'fleshy,' or pure white, in some cases marked with small and large blotches of faded red, confluent at the obtuse end, and openly dispersed over the rest of the surface, overlying blots of faint lilac-grey; others have a conspicuous zone round the large end, with a few scanty blotches of light red and bluish grey on the remainder; in others, again, the markings are confined to a few very large roundish blotches of the above colors at one end, or, again, several still larger clouds of brick-red at the obtuse end, with a few blotches of the same at the other. Dimensions from 1·0 to 0·86 inch in length, by 0·72 to 0·68 in breadth. I once observed a pair in the north of Ceylon very cleverly forming their nest on a horizontal fork by first constructing the side furthest from the angle, thus forming an arch, which was then joined to the fork by the formation of the bottom of the structure.

"The parent birds in this species display great courage, vigorously sweeping down on any intruder who may threaten to molest their young."

Kowda or Kawuda Panika, Ceyl.

Coloration. Upper plumage deep indigo; throat, breast, and abdomen dark brown, the lower part of the abdomen frequently-mixed with white; vent and under tail-coverts generally white, sometimes merely albescent; occasionally only the under tail-coverts are white.

Iris red; bill, legs, and feet blackish (flume Coll.). Of the same dimensions as D. caerulescens.

The amount of white on the lower plumage of this and D. caerulescens is variable, and occasionally a bird is met with which might, as regards this character, be assigned indifferently to one or the other species, but the colour of the throat and breast will, in these cases, be a safe guide to identification.

Distribution. Ceylon only.

Habits, &c. This species breeds from March to May, constructing its nest in a tree at a considerable height from the ground. The eggs, two to four in number, are whitish marked with red, and measure about .93 by .7.

The White-bellied Drongo.

Lanius caerulescens Linn., S. N., i, p. 134 (1766) (Bangala). Dicrurus caerulescens.   Blanf. & Oates, i, p. 316.

Vernacular names. Phari buchanga, Dhapri (Hind.); D'houli (Beng.) ; Nella or Kenda passala poligadu (Tel.).

Description. Whole upper plumage deep glossy indigo with greenish reflections in certain lights; wing-quills and inner webs of rectrices blackish brown; chin, throat, breast and upper flanks brownish grey; belly, posterior flanks, vent and under tail-coverts white; lores and a line at the base of the upper mandible black.

Colours of soft parts. Iris red to lake; bill, legs and feet, black.

Measurements. Total length about 140 mm.; wing 120 to 138 mm.; tail 110 to 138 mm.; culmen (measured from anterior front of nostril to tip) 15 to 17 mm.; tarsus about 19 mm.

Young are very brown, retaining traces of the nestling plumage on the breast, flanks, axillaries and under wing-coverts.

Nestling. Dull brown, the breast and flanks barred with white and the wing-coverts edged with pale rufescent white.

Distribution. India from the extreme South to Cutch on the West and thence North to Garhwal, but not West and North of this. On the East it extends to Western Bengal and Behar and it ascends the Himalayas between these points to about 6,000 feet.

Nidification. The White-bellied Drongo breeds from the foothills and broken ground adjoining them up to at least 6,000 feet and perhaps 1,000 feet higher. It keeps to heavily wooded country and to forest, laying in April, May and June, making the usual Drongo's nest, though, perhaps, rather larger and stronger in proportion to its size. The materials consist principally of roots and grasses and the nests are attached to the outer branches of small or medium-sized trees. The eggs number two or three and are tvpical small Drongo-eggs, varying in ground from the palest cream or yellowish-salmon to a warm salmon, the markings varying almost as much as in the Black Drongos. Thirty eggs average 23.2 x 17.5 mm.: maxima 24.1 x l8.0 mm.; minima 19.1 x l5.2 mm.

Habits. This Drongo is far more of a forest-bird than either the Black or Grey Drongos, though it is found about plantations and cultivation as well, where there are lots of trees. In its manners, flight, diet, etc. it differs little from these birds and it is equally courageous and pugnacious. It is said to have a sweeter song than any of the other Drongos of this genus.

The White-vented Drongo.

Dicrurus leucopygiatis Blyth, J. A. S. B., xv, p. 198 (1846) (Ceylon); Blanf. & Oates, i, p. 316.

Vernacular names. Kowda or Kawuda Panika (Ceyl.).

Description. Similar to the preceding race but, generally, with the white restricted to the vent and under tail-coverts and posterior flanks In some birds the abdomen is also nearly all white but very seldom to anything like the extent it is in true caerulescens. The breast is generally a browner grey than it is in that bird and it is also a good deal smaller.
Colour of soft parts as in the preceding bird.

Measurements. Wing 104 to 123 rain.; tail 104 to 120 mm.; tarsus about 18 mm.; culmen 15 to 16 mm.

Distribution. Ceylon only.

Nidification. This Drongo breeds during March, April and May in the plains and foot-hills of Ceylon but, apparently, not up to any great height in the hills, It occurs in Kandy and up to 2,000 feet but there are only records of stragglers above this height. The nest is a shallow cup placed in the outer branches of trees in forests or plantations at heights between 10 and 30 feet from the ground. It is made of roots and grasses, sometimes of one of these only and is generally ornamented on the outside with scraps of bark, lichen or moss, the whole structure being strengthened with many cobwebs. Since rubber has been planted in Ceylon the rubber-trees seem 1o be very favourite sites. The eggs are like those of the last bird and a beautiful series of fifty egg collected by Messrs. E. Waite and W. W. A. Phillips average 22.6 x 17.1 mm.: maxima 25.0 X 18.0 and 23-5 x 18'2 mm.; minima 18.0  X 15.1 mm.

Habits. Those of the preceding bird
