Abstract:Hunting season recoveries and reobservation of white-tailed ptarmigan (Lagopus leucurus) banded on wintering sites in north-central Colorado provided 99 and 45 movements from and to winter use sites, respectively. Females were consistently more mobile than males; subadult females traversed the longest distances and adult males the shortest. Average movements of males generally were restricted to less than 2.5 km for adults and 4.0 km for subadults, whereas corresponding figures for females were 6.8 and 8.5 km. The longest movement was 22.7 km for a subadult female. Almost identical patterns were noted for movements from and to winter use sites. Seventy-four percent of the movements from the wintering area were in westerly directions, especially northwest. The longest movements were also in these directions.
