Abstract:Larvae of the caddis Plectrocnemia conspersa (Curtis) spin nets for prey capture. The form of the net is determined by the physical conditions which prevail where a larva settles. In swiftly flowing water it constructs a 'canopy' net; in shallow, slowly flowing water a 'surface' net; and in deep, slowly flowing water a 'flat' net. Each larva is capable of spinning any type of net. During calm, dry weather, diet reflects net form, with 'surface' net holders taking significantly more terrestrial items (mainly litter mites and winged insects) and chironomid pupae. After rain, however, the diets associated with the three types of net are the same. The majority of aquatic prey are derived locally, some arriving in the drift, others moving across the bottom. These prey species have a very patchy distribution, and P. conspersa takes advantage of prey-rich patches by aggregating in them. The variable net-spinning behaviour enables the caddis population to exploit a wide range of prey and microhabitats.
