Abstract: | The nesting behavior of male bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) in the field was described with particular emphasis on the frequency of selected agonistic and reproductive behaviors as a function of nest-site location. Nest construction, courtship and spawning were typical of the family Centrarchidae. Agonistic behavior was increased in crowded nesting situations. Spawning males were more aggressive than nonspawning males and often left the nest, which provided opportunities for other males to enter the nest and engage the female. Simultaneous polygamous spawning is a natural, although relatively rare, occurrence for bluegills. |
