AVIS-IBIS

Birds of Indian Subcontinent

Genus RHODONESSA

Genus RHODONESSA.

Rhodonessa Reichenbach, Natur. Syst. Vogel, p.ix (1852). Type by orig. desig., Anas caryophyllacea Latham.

In structure this genus is intermediate between Asarcornis and An s but differs entirely in colour and colour-pattern from any other of this family. The bulla ossea at the lower end of the male trachea is very peculiarly formed, being swollen on both sides and anteriorly. Sexes differ slightly in colour.

There is only one species which is confined to India and even there it is very rare.
