Genus MERGUS.

Mergus, i, m. (mergo), a diver; a diving-bird, in classical Latin.

Bill" narrow and toothed. An occipital crest, small in females. Do not acquire full plumage till second autumnal moult. Tail wedge-shaped, of sixteen or eighteen feathers. Palaearctic region.
