THE COLLARED or AUSTRIAN PRATINCOLE.

Pratincola, from protum =a meadow ; incola=an inhabitant. From its frequenting the open meadows in Austria.

Male 8 4/5" to 9 1/2". Legs brownish. Bill black. White tipping to short secondaries conspicuous. Exterior tail-feathers project 2" to 2 1/2" beyond central ones. (S.F. ii. 284.)

Migratory, occurring in summer in C. and S. Europe, W. and C Asia; breeding in Sind and wintering in Africa. (B. 1426.) See illustration, p. 149. Also G. melanoptera. 9 1/2". From S. E. Europe. Wintering in Africa.
