Genus CICONIA.

Ciconia Brisson, Ornith., i, p. 48, v, p. 361 (1760).

Type by taut., Ardea ciconia Linn. The typical Storks have a long, stout, tapering and pointed bill, the lower mandible slightly inclined upwards towards the end ; nostrils almost linear, basal and pervious; some naked orbital skin but surrounded by feathers ; lower half of tibia naked; tarsi long and reticulated; feet short with broad toes; claws very short, broad and depressed.
