Genus CARDUELIS

Carduelis Brisson, Orn., iii, p. 53 (1700). Type, Carduelis carduelis Linn.

The genus Carduelises at once sharply divided from all Hose-Finches, except Procarduelis, by its long, slender, straight and pointed bill and from all Rose-Finches by its coloration, the principal characteristic being the bright red face. The wings are longer and more pointed than in any of the Hose-Finches ; the tail is long and very slightly forked.
